Apparels created in Indian handlooms were once priced assets in markets around the world. Until the 18th century, the prized apparel created by India’s handlooms dominated the markets in Europe. Despite rapid industrialization of India’s economy, the handloom weaving industry still offers a source of livelihood to more than 4.3 million weavers and artisans across the country.

Despite a gradual decline in the number of people getting into the handloom sector, it has shown remarkable resilience at a time when apparels, like any other fashion products are being mass produced all over the world. The rapid developments in technology and social media has fueled considerable interest among people regarding handwoven textiles from different parts of the country.

There has been considerable activity among Indian designers to breathe new life into the handloom sector, which still suffers from high negligence. To give impetus to the talent of handloom weavers, textile minister Smriti Irani posted her own picture, dressed in a handloom cotton saree from Bihar. She also encouraged people for sharing their handloom look-books.
